There are many ways a person using drugs can get help for their addiction. Each individual should find the treatment and recovery options that makes sense for them. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.
Here are six:
1
Talk to a doctor or other healthcare professional. They can assess the individual’s addiction and recommend treatment options.
2
Join a support group. There are many support groups available for people with addictions, such as SMART Recovery, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
3
Attend therapy. Therapy can help people understand their addiction and develop coping mechanisms.
4
Enter a treatment program. There are many different types of treatment programs available, such as inpatient, outpatient, and residential programs.
5
Peer-assisted recovery. Peer Recovery Specialists function as recovery coaches. Working with peers often involves weekly one-on-one meetings and/or the use of mutual aid groups to initiate and/or maintain recovery.
6
Take medication. Medication can help to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
